Glossary of Sunroom & Outdoor Living Terms

Your quick reference guide to architectural and design terms related to sunrooms, solariums, and other enclosed living spaces. Each definition includes links to authoritative sources and related Sunspace products for more information.

Sunroom

A glass-enclosed addition with an opaque, insulated roof designed to provide abundant natural light while maintaining energy efficiency. Sunrooms can be three-season or four-season depending on insulation and HVAC.

Solarium

A room constructed almost entirely of glass walls and often a glass roof, designed for maximum sunlight exposure. Historically used for light therapy, solariums today are often luxurious living spaces.

Conservatory

A glass-walled, often ornate structure traditionally used for plant cultivation, especially exotic species. Modern conservatories can serve as elegant living spaces with the right insulation and framing.

Greenhouse

A structure made of transparent walls and roof, designed primarily for plant growth by trapping solar heat. While not intended as living space, greenhouses can be adapted into hybrid plant-and-living spaces with Sunspace systems.

Orangerie

A historic building style from the 17th century used to protect citrus trees in cold climates. Combines tall windows with solid roofing for light and insulation.

Florida Room

An enclosed living space with large windows designed for warm-weather enjoyment, common in the southern United States. Similar to a sunroom but often less insulated; can be adapted for year-round use in colder climates.

Three-Season Room

A sunroom enclosed with windows and screens for use in spring, summer, and fall. Not typically insulated for winter comfort in cold climates.

Four-Season Room

A fully insulated sunroom designed for year-round comfort, equipped with thermal windows, insulated walls, and integrated heating/cooling.

Garden Room

A flexible indoor-outdoor space designed for plant enjoyment and relaxation, often combining features of a sunroom and greenhouse.

Atrium

A central open-air or glass-covered space in a building, typically featuring plants and natural light.
